Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, aka photofacial, is a way to improve the color and texture of your skin without surgery. It can undo some of the visible damage caused by sun exposure — called photoaging. You may notice it mostly on your face, neck, hands, or chest.<\/p>

An IPL photofacial treatment uses the power of broadband light to improve the appearance of dark spots, sunspots from sun exposure, rosacea, age spots, and skin texture. The treatment can also be used for\u00a0 photo rejuvenation, and to alleviate dermatologic conditions like acne. It is a popular treatment because it’s effective, affordable, and non-invasive. Not all skin types may be a candidate for IPL.<\/p>

IPL is similar to a laser treatment. However, a laser focuses just one wavelength of light at your skin, while IPL releases light of many different wavelengths, like a photo flash.<\/p>

The light from IPL is more scattered and less focused than a laser. IPL penetrates down to the second layer of your skin (dermis) without harming the top layer (epidermis), so it causes less damage to your skin.<\/p>

When it comes to IPL aftercare, the most important things to avoid are: Exfoliating too soon which can inflame the skin and prolong the healing process.
